Mixtures
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mixture | A collection of two or more different substances. |
| Pure substance | A substance made up of only one type of particle. |
| Soluble | Able to dissolve |
| Insoluble | Unable to dissolve into |
| Dissolving | When a substance is mixed into a liquid and the particles from the substance spread out evenly until they are too small to see |
| Dilute | Describes a solution with a low concentration. |
| Homogeneous | Refers to a substance or mixture where every part of the substance or mixture is identical |
| Solute | The substance that dissolves in a liquid to produce a solution. |
| Solvent | The liquid that dissolves another substance to produce a solution. |
| Concentration | The measurement of the amount of solute that is dissolved in a solution. |
| Saturated | No more solute is able to dissolve into this solution. |
| Solution | a mixture of a solute dissolved in a solvent. Solutions are transparent but may be coloured. |
| suspension | a mixture of a gas or liquid and an insoluble substance. The insoluble substance settles to the bottom when the mixture is left to stand |
| colloid | a mixture in which extremely small particles of one substance are spread evenly throughout another substance but are not dissolved |
| emulsion | a colloid with droplets of one liquid spread evenly through another |
| Distillation | A process used to separate solutions based on their different boiling points. |
| Distillate | The liquid that is collected from distillation |
| Evaporation | Separation technique used to remove the solvent from a solution by turning it into a gas. |
| Boiling Point | The temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas. |
| Condensing | the process of a gas turning into a liquid |
| Separation | Taking two mixed substances and isolating one from the other. |
| Sieving | Separation technique where liquid is removed through holes that large solids cannot fit through. |
| Centrifuge | Device that rapidly spins suspensions to separate them. |
| Filtration | Separation of a solid from a suspension by the use of holes that suspended particles cannot pass through. |
| Filter | Material made up of many tiny holes that is used to separate a suspension. |
| Filtrate | The part of a suspension that passes through a filter. |
| Residue | The part of a suspension left behind in the filter after filtration. |
| Decanting | Separation technique to remove one layer from a mixture that has settled into layers. |
| Chromatography | a method of separating a mixture by making it move over or through another substance that stays still. Use to separate inks. |
