Deaf Theater

TermDefinition
Name sign Unique sign that is a personal identifier for that one person.
Visual perception The ability to make meaning out of visual information
National Theater for the Deaf (NTD) Founded in Connecticut by Broadway and people from Gallaudet College, there was a large audience for their production, sign language and dance-like elements were combined with spoken language to make the productions accessible to hearing audiences too
Shadowing NTD produced many touring productions, using mainly Deaf actors but also having hearing actors on the side of the stage voicing the actor’s parts
ASL Literature A unique visual literary art form developed within the Deaf community; it includes poetry, stories, folk tales, dramatic productions, and songs.
Visual rhyming The use of signs that have like handshapes
Alliteration Using the same beginning letter or sound in a series of words
ABC stories Create stories where the first letter of each line begins with successive letters of the alphabet
De’VIA Deaf View/Image Art and is a movement started by Deaf artists in 1989 to create art that reflects Deaf culture and experience to a primarily Deaf audience
Affirmative art Can be any type of art that is about Deaf empowerment or acceptance, reflecting the myriad personal experiences of individual artists to life as a Deaf person
Resistive art Expresses Deaf artists responses to oppression and suppression by society.
