| Term | Definition |

| alliteration | The effect achieved by repeating consonant sounds at the beginnings of words. |
| antagonist | Person or force who opposes the main character |
| characters | The people in the story. Writers create and reveal the personalities of the characters by describing physical appearances. |
| characterization | Revealing a character’s thoughts, showing how a character acts, or showing how others react to others. |
| climax | The turning point of a piece of literature. The point at which things suddenly change. |
| conflict | A problem occurring between two forces in a piece of literature. ex. man vs society. |
| dilemma | A situation where a difficult choice has to be made. A problem. |
| hyperbole | A figure of speech using exaggeration to emphasize the statement being made. |
| internal rhyme | In poetry when two words on the SAME LINE rhyme. |
| metaphor | A figure of speech in which two things are compared WITHOUT “like” or “as”. |
| mood | The atmosphere and feeling an author creates in a work through the choice of setting, imagery, details, descriptions and other descriptive language. |
| motivation | Something that causes a person to act in a certain way; incentive~ the reason why someone did something |
| onomonapoeia | The device making words imitate the sounds they refer to. Ex: snap, boom, cling |
| personification | When a NON-HUMAN is given human qualities/characteristics. |
| plot | A series of related events that present and resolve a conflict. The usual pattern of plot is conflict, climax and resolution |
| protagonist | Main character in the story. |
| sensory images | A description using one or more of the five senses |
| setting | The time and place in which the action of a narrative occurs. The setting may serve as a background or it may help create an atmosphere which is important to the story. |
| smile | A figure of speech expressing a comparison using the words “like” or “as”. |
| suspense | The element in a literary work that keeps a reader wanting to know what happens next |
| symbol | An object which stands for something more complex. |
| theme | The message or lesson an author is trying to communicate through a piece of literature; the underlying idea in a story. |
| thesis | The focus/main idea of a piece of writing. |
| tone | The mood or prevailing feeling in a poem or story. |
| Pronoun Agreement | (he/she/we/it…) |
| Subject/verb agreemen | (subject- who or what the sentence is about) |
| The Writing Proces | The goal is to produce high quality pieces of writing. |
