QuestionAnswer
How do you create the best possible solution to a problem? By following the engineering design process
What is the most effective way to generate potential solutions to a problem? Brainstorming with a group and individually
How many alternative solutions should you generate? As many as possible
What is an engineer? A person who is trained in and uses technological and scientific knowledge to solve problems
What is engineering? The application of mathematical and scientific principles to improve or better life.
What kind of work do engineers do? Research, Design, Supervise, Produce or Construct, Operations, and Sales.
Why keep an engineering notebook? It is recognized as a legal document used in patents. It is also used to show when ideas occurred and the process from an idea to a solution.
What are the best practices for an engineering notebook? Be neat; be accurate; be legible; be thorough
Explain the concept of proportion. Paying attention to an object's shape and size to accurately reflect it.
Why do you need to make realistic sketches? Representing ideas with realistic sketches makes them easier to communicate with and have others understand. It also makes the design process faster and more efficient.
Why use sketches? They make communicating ideas faster and clearer.
What is an invention? A new product, system, or process that has never existed before.
What is an innovation? An improvement to a product, system, or process.
What is brainstorming? A group technique which generates ideas through spontaneous discussion
What is a constraint? A limit in the design process
What is a design? 1)A plan or drawing produced to show the look and function of something before being built 2) An iterative decision-making process for solving problems
What is a design brief? A written plan that identifies a problem's constraints and the criteria for its solution
What is a design statement? A part of the design brief that describes what an ideal solution would do.
What is an engineering notebook? A book where an engineer documents their work in chronological order
What is a prototype? A full-scale model used to test a design concept through real observations and necessary adjustments.
What does it mean to research? The systematic study of sources in order to reach a new conclusion
What are the three main types of engineering? Civil engineering, Electrical engineering, and Mechanical engineering.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
