TermDefinition
physical property A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance
physical change A change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance
chemical property A characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances
chemical change A change in matter that produces one or more new substances
metal elements characterized by physical properties that include shininess, malleability, ductility, and conductivity.

malleable capable of being changed; easily shaped
nonmetals Elements that are poor conductors of heat and electric current
brittle Easily broken; not flexible
monatomic consisting of one atom
covalent bonding results from the sharing of electron pairs between two atoms
diatomic consisting of two atoms
allotropes two or more different molecular forms of the same element in the same physical state
metalloids Elements that have properties of both metals and nonmetals.
semiconductor A substance that can conduct electricity under some conditions
