6.2 Element Classes

| physical property | A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance |
| physical change | A change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance |
| chemical property | A characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances |
| chemical change | A change in matter that produces one or more new substances |
| metal | elements characterized by physical properties that include shininess, malleability, ductility, and conductivity. |
| ductile | can be drawn into wires |
| malleable | capable of being changed; easily shaped |
| nonmetals | Elements that are poor conductors of heat and electric current |
| brittle | Easily broken; not flexible |
| monatomic | consisting of one atom |
| covalent bonding | results from the sharing of electron pairs between two atoms |
| diatomic | consisting of two atoms |
| allotropes | two or more different molecular forms of the same element in the same physical state |
| metalloids | Elements that have properties of both metals and nonmetals. |
| semiconductor | A substance that can conduct electricity under some conditions |
