Statistics Review

TermDefinition
Mean the arithmetic average of a distribution, obtained by adding the scores and then dividing by the number of scores
Median of a set of numbers the middle score in a distribution; half the scores are above it and half are below it If there are two numbers, add them and divide by two
Mode the most frequently occurring score(s) in a distribution
Range the difference between the highest and lowest scores in a distribution
Dot Plot a graphical device that summarizes data by the number of dots above each data value on the horizontal axis
Population The entire group
Maximum Largest number
minimum smallest number
measures of center summarizes date by providing a central piece of data
random sample everyone in the population must have an equal chance of being selected
