| Refrain | A line, or an entire stanza that is repeated throughout the poem |
| Repetition | A phrase or a single word repeated throughout a poem |
| Personification | A non-human is given human-like characteristics or qualities |
| Simile | Comparison of two things using like or as |
| Metaphor | Comparing two things without using like or as |
| Extended metaphor | A metaphor that goes on for several lines or possibly the entire length of the work |
| Hyperbole | An exaggeration for the sake of emphasis and is not to be taken literally |
| Onomatopoeia | The use of words whose sound seem to resemble sounds they describe |
| Apostrophe | Addressing someone or something usually not present |
| Symbol | Word or image that signifies something other that what is literally represented |
| Idiom | An expression where the literal meaning of the words is not the meaning of the expression |
| Alliteration | The repetition of the same beginning consonant sound on a line |
| Allusion | Is a figure of speech making casual reference to a famous historical or literary figure or event |
| Pun | A humorous play on words |
