Physics heat defs

TermDefinition
What is heat A form of energy (J)
What is temperature The measure of the hotness or coldness of a body(K)
What are thermometric properties Any physical properties that change measurably with temperature
Give 5 examples of thermometric properties 1. Colour 2. Electrical resistance 3. Length of a column of liquid 4. Emf - electromotive force of a thermocouple 5. Volume of a gas at constant pressure + pressure of a gas at constant volume
Define heat capacity The amount of heat energy needed to change the temperature of an object by 1K (JK^-1)
What is the formula for heat capacity E = CΔθ
Define specific heat capacity The amount of heat energy needed to change the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1K (Jkg^-1K^-1)
What is the formula for specific heat capacity E = mcΔθ
What is latent heat Heat energy needed to change the state of a substance without a change in temperature(J)
Whats the equation for latent heat E = l
What is specific latent heat The heat energy needed to change the state of 1kg of a substance without a change in temperature(Jkg^-1)
Whats the equation for specific latent heat E = ml
What is Conduction Transfer of heat energy in a solid by passing on kinetic energy from molecule to molecule
Define convection Transfer of heat energy by circulation of the heated parts of a liquid or gas
Radiation Transfer of heat energy as electromagnetic waves, without the need for a medium
What does the solar constant mean The amount of solar energy hitting 1m^2 of the earths atmosphere every second
What is the u-value of a structure The amount of heat energy lost per second throuh 1m^2 of a structure when a temperature difference of 1K is maintained between its ends

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
