GCSE Language Features
| Term | Definition | Example |

| Alliteration | This is when words that start with the same sound are close together. | Creepy crawly caterpillar. |
| Colours | Used to convey moods and emotions. | The sea was a vivid, deep blue colour. |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that imitate the sound they are naming | The lion gave an almighty roar! |
| Adjectives | A describing word | The giant building was imposing. |
| Simile | A literary device that uses the words “like” or “as” to compare two ideas. | She sang like an angel. |
| The senses | Use the 5 senses to create a vivid image | The smell of the fresh sea air. |
| Rule of Three | Using three adjectives, or phrases in a row. | The good, the bad and the ugly. |
| Metaphor | Stating that one thing is something else. It is a comparison, but it does NOT use like or as to make the comparison. | Her eyes were twinkling diamonds. |
| Adverb | Tells you how the verb is doing something | Jack ran swiftly. |
| Pathetic Fallacy | When you use the weather to reflect what is happening in the scene. | Jack had a bounce in his step, as the sun beamed down from a cloudless sky. |
| Personification | When something is given human characteristics | The trees waved in the breeze. |
