Language Techniques

Year 7 - The Writer's Toolkit.

TermDefinition
Personification When things that are not human are given human qualities.
Pun A play on words which depends on two words that sound similar, or on their being two different meanings for the same word.
Repetition Repeating words, phrases, sentences, stanzas, choruses, etc.
Rhythm The beat of the poem - usually created by syllables per line but there are many things that can affect rhythm speed.
Simile A comparison of two things where one thing is said to be ‘like’ or the same ‘as’ another.
Symbolism Something that stands for something else.
Alliteration Repetition of a consonant sound in words that are close together.
Assonance Repetition of a vowel sound in words that are close together.
Emotive Language When certain word choices are made to evoke an emotional response.
Hyperbole Exaggerating something.
Imagery The picture or image created in our imagination by a writer’s choice of words and use of language.
Irony Using language that normally signifies the opposite.
Metaphor A comparison between unlike things that states that one thing IS another.
Onomatopoeia Where the sound of the word is the same as its meaning.
