Year 7 - The Writer's Toolkit.
| Term | Definition |

| Personification | When things that are not human are given human qualities. |
| Pun | A play on words which depends on two words that sound similar, or on their being two different meanings for the same word. |
| Repetition | Repeating words, phrases, sentences, stanzas, choruses, etc. |
| Rhythm | The beat of the poem - usually created by syllables per line but there are many things that can affect rhythm speed. |
| Simile | A comparison of two things where one thing is said to be ‘like’ or the same ‘as’ another. |
| Symbolism | Something that stands for something else. |
| Alliteration | Repetition of a consonant sound in words that are close together. |
| Assonance | Repetition of a vowel sound in words that are close together. |
| Emotive Language | When certain word choices are made to evoke an emotional response. |
| Hyperbole | Exaggerating something. |
| Imagery | The picture or image created in our imagination by a writer’s choice of words and use of language. |
| Irony | Using language that normally signifies the opposite. |
| Metaphor | A comparison between unlike things that states that one thing IS another. |
| Onomatopoeia | Where the sound of the word is the same as its meaning. |
