BMOD 3C: extinction

BMOD3C - - behaviour

QuestionAnswer
Operant Extinction Ceasing to reinforce a conditioned behaviour in order to stop it from occuring
Respondent Extinction Failing to follow up a CS with the US to extinct a CR
Distinguish between forgetting and extinction. Forgetting - a behaviour weakened because it has not been practiced for a while Extinction - removing reinforcement but behaviour practice still occurs
Cite the eight factors responsible for the success of extinction. (procedures 1-5) 1. control of reinforcers 2. combining extinction with positve reinforcement for an alternative behaviour 3. Setting free of alternative reinforcers 4. Clear instructions/rules 5. Schedule of reinforcement
Cite the possible blow back of extinction (procedures 6-8) 6. Extinction burst 7. Elicited aggression 8. Spontaneous recovery
Continuous reinforcement reinforcing each instance of a behaviour extinction: quick
intermittent reinforcement reinforcing on a schedule extinction: slow aka resistant to extinction
What is an extinction burst and spontaneous recovery? Extinction Burst: Behaviour gets worse before it gets better Spontaneous Recovery: Reappearance of an extinguished behaviour after a break in practice
What are two major pitfalls in applying extinction procedures? Unaware-Misapplication Pitfall Partial-Knowledge-Misapplication
Guidelines for the effective application of Operant extinction 1. Select behaviour (specific, controllable) 2. Consider (reinforcing and alternative behaviour and reinforcer) 3. Implement the plan 4. Wean the student from the program
What is bootleg reinforcement? When someone else reinforces the beahaviour and the extinction program needs to happen again
How can noncontingent reinforcement be used to decrease a behaviour? The reinforcer can be provided periodically, so that the maladaptive behaviour is not required to get the attention.
What is the drawback to the non-contingent reinforcement method? Because it is non-contingent, the client may not want to participate in teaching sessions or may reduce desirable behaviour

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
