7th Biomes

TermDefinition
biome a large area of Earth that has its own kind of climate, soil, plants, and animals
climate the weather in an area over a long period of time; the primary factor that determines the type of biome in an area
tundra a biome with very harsh winters, low average temperature, little moisture, and a short summer season
arctic tundra a biome in the arctic areas of the world near the poles and is influenced by permafrost
alpine tundra a biome found in the mountains at an altitude above the tree line
tiaga a cold biome, stretching across the northern portions of North America, Europe, and Asia close to the tundra
deciduous forests a biome with a moderate climate, a long growing season, and cold winters, found in the eastern half of North America, the middle of Europe, and Eastern Asia
tropical rain forests biome with warm and humid climate, lots of heavy rainfall, found along the equator
grasslands biome found in the middle latitudes in the interiors of the continents, where annual precipitation is great enough to support mostly grasses
deserts biome having a cold or hot climate, found in 1/5 of the Earth's land area, and that support few plants and animals
marine water biomes that can be saltwater such as oceans and seas, or freshwater, including lakes, streams, rivers, and ponds
