What is a species? a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding.
What is artificial selection? When nature provided the variation,and humans selected those variations that they found usefuly.
What is meant by "struggle for existence? Means that members of each species compete regularly to obtain food,living space, and other ties of life.
How did Darwin use the term "fitness" To determine the ability of an individual to survive and reproduce in its specific environment.
What is an adaptation to evolutionists? Is any inherited characteristic that increases an organism's chance of survival.
What is meant by survival of the fittest? Individuals that are better suited to their environment-survive and reproduce most successfully.
What is natural selection? Results in changes in the inherited characteristics of a population./
How does descent with modification work? Species descended,changing overtime from other species.
What is common descent as used in this chapter? Living and extinct species derived from common ancestors.
What is a homologous structure? similar physical features in organisms that share a common ancestor.
What is a vestigial organ? When the organs of many animals are so reduced in size that they are vestiges,or traces,of homologous organs in other species.
