Key vocabulary words for Algebra 1
Term | Definition |

Function Notation | A way to tell you what number to use to substitute into the equation for the variable and solve. |
Linear function | A linear function is a function whose graph is a line. |
Polynomial | An expression which is composed of variables, constants and exponents |
Constant | A numerical value that does not change. |
Variable | A variable is a quantity that may change within the context of a mathematical problem or equation. Remember it 'varies' or changes. |
Term | In Algebra a term is either a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together. Terms are separated by + or − signs, or sometimes by divide. |
Monomial | A polynomial with a single term. Example: 2x |
Binomial | A polynomial with 2 terms. Example: 3x + 1 |
Trinomial | A polynomial with 3 terms. Example: 3x^2 + 4x - 8 |
Order of Operations | The correct way to evaluate an expression. PEMDAS - Parentheses first, next exponents, followed by multiplication and division in the order they are in the expression and finally any adding or subtracting. |
Square | When you square a number, you multiply it by itself. For example, 7^2 is the same as 7 x 7 which equals 49. |
Square Root | The opposite of squaring a number. If you are finding the square root of 81, you are asking what number can you multiply by itself to get 81. In this case that would be 9. |
