forming of sed rocks

QuestionAnswer
what are sediments sediments are small pieces of rock that are moved and deposited by water, wind, glaciers, and gravity.
what is weathering Weathering produces rock and mineral fragments known as sediments.
what is Chemical Weathering Chemical weathering occurs when the minerals in a rock are dissolved or otherwise chemically changed.
what is Physical Weathering During physical weathering, however, minerals remain chemically unchanged.Rock fragments break off of the solid rock along fractures or grain boundaries.
what is erosion The removal and transport of sediment is called erosion.
what is Deposition When transported sediments are deposited on the ground or sink to the bottom of a body of water, deposition occurs.
what is Lithification lithification, the physical and chemical processes that transform sediments into sedimentary rocks.
what is Compaction lithification begins with compaction, The weight of overlying sediments forces the sedimentgrains closer together, causing the physical changes
what is Cementation Cementation occurs when mineral growth glues sediment grains together into solid rock.
what is Bedding The primary feature of sedimentary rocks is horizontal layering called bedding. This feature results from the way sediment settles out of water or wind.
what is Graded bedding Bedding in which the particle sizes become progressively heavier and coarser toward the bottom layers is called graded bedding.
what is Cross Bedding cross bedding is formed as inclined layers of sediment are deposited across a horizontal surface. When these deposits become lithified, the cross-beds are preserved in the rock.
what are Ripple Marks When sediment is moved into small ridges by wind or wave action or by a river current, ripple marks form.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
