| personification | gives the qualities of a person to an animal, object, or idea. | The stars danced in the night sky. |
| oxymoron | combination of two words that are the opposite. | Ladies Man, Icy Hot, All Alone. |
| alliteration | repeated consonant sounds at the beginning of the words. | Six snakes slithered south. |
| assonance | repetition of vowel sounds. | He received three emails today. |
| hyperbole | an exaggeration. | I told you a million times to stop talking! |
| irony | the opposite of what you expect. | "Lovely weather!" It's pouring rain though. |
| idiom | say one thing but mean another. | It's raining cats and dogs! |
