Water Sources

Science Test

QuestionAnswer
Water Cycle A process in which all of Earth's water is recycled
What powers the water cycle? energy from the sun
About how much of the Earth's water is stored in the ocean as salt water? 97%
Where is the most fresh water on Earth located? glaciers and ice caps
Why is it important to conserve water? - most of Earth's water is salt water -people and other organisms must have freshwater to live -people use freshwater faster than it can be naturally replenished through water cycle -most fresh water is hard to access since it's in glaciers/ice caps
What is the sun's role in the water cycle? -sun heats water causing liquid to turn to gas (evaporation) -sun is a source of energy for that step in water cycle
Describe one way that human activity can negatively impact an ecosystem. -cut down forests- destroying/changing ecosystem -litter and dump trash- unsafe for organisms/drinking water unsafe -transportation uses fuel that pollutes air -factories pollute air- poor air quality
Describe one way humans can reduce the impact on Earth's resources through positively impacting the ecosystem. -reduce the amound of waste we produce -reuse items -recycle materials into something new -plant new trees to replace the ones that were cut down -reduce pollution from factories and plants -prevent run-off from agriculture -clean sewage water
evaporation the sun's heat turns liquid water into a gas
condensation water vapor forms clouds in the atmosphere
precipitation water falls from clouds to the Earth as rain, snow, etc.
run-off water flows down a mountain as a river
geosphere consists of earth’s interior and the solid, rocky crust covering all of the planet, including the ocean floor. It is made of soil, liquid magma, minerals, sediments, and sand.
atmosphere the body of air that surrounds our planet
biosphere composed of all living organisms, such as plants, animals, and humans
hydrosphere composed of all the water on or near earth
