hierarchy a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority
interdependency each group providing goods or services for another, helping society function
social structure a system of ranking people based on different factors or characteristics, like socioeconomic status, religion, or cultural differences
Caste System social structure in Ancient India
status a position or rank in relationship to others
upper class In ancient civilizations, this group usually included rulers, nobles, and priests. This group typically had more power and more wealth.
lower class In ancient civilizations, this group usually included merchants, artisans, and peasants. This group typically had less power and less wealth.
equity the quality of being fair and impartial (treating everyone justly and fairly)
socioeconomic the social class of an individual or group, often measured as a combination of education (what is the highest level of schooling you attended), income (how much money you make) and occupation (your job)
social mobility the movement of individuals or groups in social position over time
feudal system a system in which people gave kings and lords money and worked in exchange for protection; it was a system of land ownership and duties
noble social class with high social or political status; advised king, collected taxes, and implemented laws
peasant class of people who are farmers or laborers of low social rank
Pharaoh a ruler of Ancient Egypt
scribe a person in ancient times who knew how to read and write and was responsible for keeping government records
merchant a person who makes money by selling goods
artisan a skilled craftsperson who makes goods
limitations a limiting rule or circumstance; a restriction
