Magnetism
Term | Definition |
---|---|
conventional current | Current that flows from the positive side of the battery to the negative side aka the direction of positive charge flow, even though we now know that negative charges are the ones to move. For hand rules, must use right hand. |
electromagnetic induction | The process of generating a potential difference (and thus a current) in a conductor due to relative motion between the conductor and a magnetic field. |
electron current | Current that flows from the negative side of the battery to the positive side aka the direction of negative charge flow. For hand rules, must use left hand. |
ferromagnetic material | A material that can be magnetized because it contains magnetic domains |
geographic north pole | The magnetic south pole of the Earth's magnetic field is located near here. |
geographic south pole | The magnetic north pole of the Earth's magnetic field is located near here. |
induced current | Current produced in a conductor by a changing magnetic field. |
magnetic declination | The angle between geographic north and the north to which a compass needle points. Changes slightly with time. Navigation maps must be updated. |
magnetic domains | Microscopic clusters of aligned atoms. When these are all aligned together, the magnetic effects combine to create a magnetic field.(plural) |
magnetic field lines | Imaginary lines that map out the magnetic field around a magnet. (plural) |
magnetic field strength | The number of magnetic field lines of flux per unit area passing through a region. (The density of magnetic field lines) |
magnetic field | The region surrounding a magnet where a magnetic force can be felt. |
magnetic interactions | Any interaction between two magnets or between a magnet and a ferromagnetic material (plural) |
magnetic poles | The ends of a magnet, where the magnetic force is the strongest (plural) |
magnetic reversal | A switch in the direction of Earth's magnetic field so that the magnetic north pole becomes the magnetic south pole and the magnetic south pole becomes the magnetic north pole. Occurs on average every 200,000 to 250,000 years. |
magnetism | The physical phenomenon that results from moving charged particles. |
molten iron convection currents | The source of Earth's magnetic field (plural) |
moving charges | The source of all magnetism (plural) |
north pole | The south-seeking end of a magnet (attracted to other south poles) |
one-ended | A material that, when it interacts with a permanent magnet, shows the same reaction no matter which side is facing the magnet. |
permanent magnet | A material in which the magnetic domains are permanently aligned with one another to produce a combined magnetic effect. |
solenoid | A coil of wire that produces a magnetic field when carrying an electric current. Passing current through this object creates a bar magnet-like magnetic field. |
south pole | The north-seeking end of a magnet (attracted to other north poles) |
two-ended | A material, that when it interacts with a permanent magnet, shows a different reaction based on which side is facing the magnet. |
magnetic lines of flux | A synonym for magnetic field lines (plural) |
B | The symbol that represents "magnetic field" (capitalized) |
