Literary Terms

| simile | This is a comparison using the words LIKE or AS. |
| metaphor | This is a figure of speech in which something is described as though it was something else. |
| personification | This is a figure of speech in which a non-human is given human characteristics. |
| repetition | This is when a word, phrase, or idea is repeated in a text. |
| alliteration | This is when an author uses words that begin with the same consonant sound. Authors use this to draw attention to phrases. |
| onomatopoeia | This is the use of words that imitate sounds. |
| idiom | This is an expression that can't be understood from the meaning of its words. It is a common expression, like "it is raining cats and dogs." |
| audacity | the quality of being bold and daring; courageous and fearless, sometimes to the point of arrogance |
| betrayal | the act of being disloyal, deceptive, or untrustworthy |
| greed | the selfish desire for more than one needs or deserves |
| honor | a sense of what is right; high morals, values, principles, and integrity |
| hospitality | the showing of kindness to a guest or in social situations |
| loyalty | the condition of being faithful to a person, idea, or belief |
| pride | a high opinion of oneself |
| vengeance | infliction of punishment in return for a wrongdoing; revenge |
| foreshadowing | the use of clues that suggest what might happen later in a story |
| mood | the emotional effect an author creates |
