Literary Terms

TermDefinition
plot This is the series of events that make up a story.
conflict This is a problem that occurs in a story.
protagonist This is the main character in a story.
antagonist This is a force that works against a protagonist.
four types of conflicts These include character vs. character, character vs. nature, character vs. society, and character vs. self.
exposition This first part of a plot might introduce characters, the setting, and background knowledge.
rising action This second part of a plot describes how the conflict develops and builds.
climax This third part of a plot is the "turning point" in a story. It often changes everything.
falling action This fourth part of a plot shows how the protagonist responds to the climax, and the story may begin to settle down.
resolution During this final part of a plot, loose ends may be tied up and readers find out how the story "ends."
hyperbole This is a statement that is very exaggerated.
simile This is a comparison using the words LIKE or AS.
metaphor This is a figure of speech in which something is described as though it was something else.
personification This is a figure of speech in which a non-human is given human characteristics.
repetition This is when a word, phrase, or idea is repeated in a text.
alliteration This is when an author uses words that begin with the same consonant sound. Authors use this to draw attention to phrases.
onomatopoeia This is the use of words that imitate sounds.
idiom This is an expression that can't be understood from the meaning of its words. It is a common expression, like "it is raining cats and dogs."
