Propellers test 2

QuestionAnswer
How are the blades of a ground-adjustable propeller retained in the hub? Clamps or bolts
What devices are used to hold the hub halves together if steel blades are used? Bolts
Which devices must be loosened before the blade angles can be adjusted? The retaining bolts or clamps
What types of pencil may be used to mark the hub and blades? Red lead, white lead, or grease pencil
If the blade angles are being adjusted with the propeller on the aircraft, why may the angles have to be adjusted two or more times? The blade angle may change during tightening process since the blades tend to hang down when the hub halves are loosened.
What is an acceptable difference in blade angle between the blades? 0.1 degrees
Which areas of the hub should be inspected with dye penetrant? The shank where the metal sleeve is used on wood, retention shoulders, grooves, and the hub.
When should the prop be overhauled? At each engine overhaul or as specified by the manufacturer
Name 2 forces that will cause an increase in blade angle on an Aeromatic propeller High airspeed and moderate power settings
What 2 factors influence blade angle of attack? Natural forces acting on the blade and the counterweights
As the aircraft transitions from climb to cruise with the same throttle setting, will blade angle increase or decrease? Increase
What is the purpose of the segmented synchronizer gear? Meshes with gears on the butt of each blade so that each blade turns the same amount during operation.
What temporary repair may be made for a small crack in the plastic coating? Apply 2 coats of clear nitrate dope to the area, allowing one hour of drying time between coats.
What would be the result if the prop were serviced with too much oil? Erratic or sluggish operation
What preparations are necessary before placing the prop in storage? The hub should be completely filled with oil and placed in a horizontal position
If the operational RPM is too high, are weights added to or removed from the counterweights? added
Why must the prop spinner be installed when flight testing the prop for RPM adjustment? The prop may have slightly different counterweight and aerodynamic action depending on whether the spinner is installed or not
What should be done with the prop if the track is out by more than 1/8 inch? overhaul
What type of cockpit control is used to operate a Beech-Roby prop? Crank handle mounted on the instrument panel.
How is the blade angle range adjusted on this prop? Changes through the connection between the arm and actuating pin
What operational condition would indicate a need to replace the control cable? Bending or catching
What is used to lubricate the gears of the pinion gear and drive gear? Gears shouldn't be lubricated
What is the purpose for applying a lubricant to the crankshaft flange before installing the prop? Prevent corrosion and allow easy removal of prop
Why is the 10 o'clock / 4 o'clock position suggested when installing a prop on a 4-cylinder horizontally opposed engine? Reduces vibration in many instances and puts the prop in position for hand propping the airplane
When checking for proper seating with Prussian Blue, what is the minimum amount on contact? 70%
What is the max. amount of penetration with a go no-go gauge? 0.002 inches
What is the rear cone bottoming? When the apex of rear cone contacts the land on the rear seat of the hub before the hub can seat on the rear cone
How is rear cone bottoming corrected? By removing up to 1/16 inches from apex of the cone
What is front cone bottoming When the front cone bottoms on the splines of the crankshaft before contacting the seat on the hub.
How is front cone bottoming corrected? By placing a spacer of no more than 1/8 inch thickness behind rear cone
What is the maximum allowable out-of-track for a light aircraft metal prop? 1/16 of an inch
How may the prop track be corrected? Shims
What device is used to safety a splined-shaft installation? Clevis pin is installed through the safety holes in the retaining nut and crankshaft, pin head should be positioned toward center of crankshaft. Washer is placed over pin and a cotter pin is installed
What is the most likely cause of vibration associated with a wood prop that has been in storage for a period of time? Moisture may be concentrated in one blade causing the prop to be out of balance.
What is the purpose of the prop hub? Helps transfer power from the crankshaft to the prop
What is the purpose of the snap ring in a tapered-shaft installation? Secure it
