Point of View Vocab

Vocabulary words and definitions

TermDefinition
Point of view the standpoint, or perspective, from which a story is told
First person the point of view in which the narrator is a character in the story and uses the pronoun I
Second person the point of view in which the narrator addresses the reader as you.
Third person the point of view in which the narrator stands outside the story and describes the characters and action, referring to the characters as he or she
Third person Limited a third-person narrator who describes the action from the perspective of only one of the characters
third- person omniscient a third-person narrator who knows and can reveal everything about all the characters and events
character point of view how a character in a story sees and reacts to other characters and events
narrator the character or voice telling a story
objective third person a type of third person writing where the narrator is not part of the story. The narrator tells what happens but doesn't know what any of the characters are thinking or feeling.
motif A subject that an author returns to often, that appears again and again in the story.
theme A message, or moral, about life and human behavior an author expresses in a text.
