EA Physics Unit 9

Electric Circuits

TermDefinition
current The rate at which charge passes a given point in a circuit.
electric circuit A closed path along which charged particles move
switch A device for making, breaking or changing the connections in an electric circuit.
ampere The SI unit for electric current
ammeter A device used to measure current.
voltmeter A device used to measure potential difference.
electrochemical cell A device that converts chemical energy to electrical energy (i.e. alkaline batteries)
battery A combination of two or more electrochemical cells
conductor A material whose electrons move readily
insulator A material whose electrons are tightly bound and few are free to move
resistance The opposition that a device or conductor offers to flow of electric current
ohm's law States that the resistance of a conductor is the ratio of the potential difference applied to its ends and the current that flows through it.
ohm The SI unit for resistance
resistivity A characteristic of a material that dictates how easily electrons flow through it. This quantity depends on the electronic structure and temperature. Resistance is directly proportional to it.
cross-sectional area A surface or area exposed by making a straight cut through something at right angles to the long axis.
resistor A device designed to have a definite amount of resistance. Used to adjust the flow of current.
variable resistor A resistor whose effective resistance can be varied by turning a dial.
series circuit A circuit in which all parts are connected end to end to provide a single path for the current.
equivalent resistance The single resistance that could replace the several resistors in a circuit.
parallel circuit A circuit in which the current can branch off into multiple paths, then recombine.
electrical power The rate of doing work or expending energy.
watt The SI unit for power
joule The SI unit for energy
placed in series How an ammeter must be placed in a circuit.
placed in parallel How a voltmeter must be placed in a circuit.
circuit analysis The process of determining V, I and R for all circuit elements.
potential difference The difference in electrical potential energy per unit charge between two locations in an electric field. Batteries create this, which then causes charges to move.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
