What is cerumen and where would you find it? cerumen=ear wax ; it is found in the external auditory canal (ear canal)
What is the external auditory canal? Also known as the ear canal or external auditory meatus. Extends from the pinna to the tympanic membrane (outer ear to ear drum)
What is a Myringotomy? A Myringotomy is the a surgery done to treat the build up fluid in the middle ear (Otitis Media). An incision is made into the inferior portion of the tympanic membrane with a myringotomy knife. Any visible drainage is suction and a PE tube is placed.
What is a PE tube? PE tube= Pressure equalization tube. A PE tube is inserted in the tympanic membrane to allow fluid to drain while the incision heals. The tube will usually fall out on its own.
What instrument do you use to pass a PE tube? alligator forceps. Try not to touch the tube while grasping the tube to avoid powder contamination.
What is the wound classification for a Myringotomy? Class II: Clean-Contaminated. This surgery is not a sterile procedure.
What OR furniture is needed for a Myringotomy? Only a Mayo stand is needed.
What are the bones of the middle ear? auditory ossicles= malleus (hammer), Incus (anvil), Stapes (stirrup) malleus is the most lateral & rests up against the tympanic membrane footplate of the stapes rests on the oval window. ossicles have movable synovial joints
