To determine if a value makes an equation true Substitute in the value, solve, see if equal True Ex. 6x = 108 if x = 18, 6(18) = 108, so yes False Ex. x-19 = 81 if x = 98, 98-19 = 70, so no
Solve 1-step equations Do the opposite operation to both sides to get x by itself (isolate)
To undo adddition subtract

Solve 1-step equation with addition Subtract from both sides
Solve 1-step equation with subtraction Add to both sides
Solve 1-step equation with multiplication (a number next to a letter or coefficient) Divide both sides

Independent Variable x-axis, not affected by dependent variable Ex. number of people, time
