| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| photoelectric effect | The emission of electrons from a metal when light shines on the metal |
| wave | particle duality |
| Planck's formula | Energy = h x frequency |
| photons | particles of light |
| ground state | the lowest possible energy of an atom |
| excited state | when an atom absorbs energy, its electrons move to a higher energy level |
| continuous spectrum | the emission of a continuous range of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation |
| atomic emission spectrum | the pattern of lines formed when light passes through a prism to separate it into the different frequencies of light it contains. |
| line spectra | the set of frequencies of the electromagnetic waves emitted by atoms of the element |
| emit | to give off |
| eject | to force or throw out |
| Spectroscopy | the branch of science concerned with the investigation and measurement of spectra produced when matter interacts with or emits electromagnetic radiation. |
| Incandescence | shining with multiple wavelengths to create "white" light |
| luminescence | light emitted by means other than burning, such as chemical or biochemical action or radiation |
