Lesson 5.1 Light

TermDefinition
light is electromagnetic radiation within the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is perceived by the human eye.
Wave Particle Duality
electromagnetic radiation The energy transferred through space by electromagnetic waves.
oscillation movement back and forth at a regular speed
wave A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place
speed of light 3.00 x 10^8 m/s
wavelength Horizontal distance between the crests or between the troughs of two adjacent waves
frequency The number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time
displacement change in position relative to the starting position
amplitude For a wave or vibration, the maximum displacement on either side of the equilibrium (midpoint) position.
inverse relationship a relationship in which one variable decreases when another variable increases
electromagnetic spectrum the range of wavelengths or frequencies over which electromagnetic radiation extends.
