1798 Rebellion

The Society of the United Irishmen The group that organised the 1798 Rebellion. Established in Belfast in 1791. Fought for political reform by bringing Irishmen of all religions together.
Protestant Ascendancy Term used to describe members of the Anglican community in Ireland who enjoyed great political and economic power and privileges in the eighteenth century.
The Act of Union 1801 The law that dissolved the Irish parliament and merged it with the British parliament in London.
Why did Wolfe Tone look to France to help After the French Revolution, France had offered help to other countries who wanted to follow their lead. France was also at war with Britain at this time and had vast resources of soldiers and weapons.
Why did the 1798 Rebellion fail? Bad planning, leaders captured, British spies had infiltrated the United Irishmen and other secret organisations, failure of French forces, events such as Scullabogue where protestants and Catholics lost trust in each other etc.
What were the consequence of the 1798 Rebellion Increased British control over Ireland, Penal laws, Irish parliament in Dublin was lost, Act of Union, peaceful methods used to gain Catholic Emancipation- Daniel O'Connell- The Liberator
