| precipitous- adj. | VERY STEEP. The wooded slope was precipitous—a vertical cliff—and hard to climb. |
| acquiesced- v. | AGREE, ACCEPTED, CONSENTED. They never acquiesced in the judgment of the court; instead, they bitterly opposed it. |
| marauders - n. | PEOPLE WHO ROAM AROUND IN SEARCH OF LOOT, OR GOODS TO STEAL. The man kept a sharp lookout for marauders who might be prowling through the woods. |
| exasperation - n. | GREAT ANNOYANCE. His exasperation at being captured was so great that he cursed aloud. |
| pious - adj. | SHOWING RELIGIOUS DEVOTION. Although not religious, his words were pious. |
| reconciliation - n. | FRIENDLY END TO A QUARREL. The fight could end in one of two ways— reconciliation or death. |
| quarrel -adj. | A HEATED ARGUMENT OR DISAGREEMENT. ..were they to hear all this of you two quarrelling. |
| invulnerable - adj. | IMPOSSIBLE TO HARM OR DAMAGE. Achilles was invulnerable, except for in his heel. |
| siege - n. | MILITARY COOPERATION WHERE ENEMY FORCES SURROUND AND CUT-OFF A TOWN OR BUILDING. |
