Like Terms and Equations

variable a number represented by a letter- can change
Coefficient number in front of a variable- being multiplied
constant A value that does not change- the number
like terms Expressions that contain the same variables to the same exponent
combine like terms add or subtract the coefficients of the variables
inverse operations operations that undo each other (opposites)
isolate the variable To get a variable alone on one side of the equation in order to solve the equation.
Solve 1-step Equation do the OPPOSITE (inverse) operation to both sides to ISOLATE the variable (x)
Inverse/Opposite of addition subtraction
Inverse/opposite of subtraction addition
The inverse/opposite of multiplication division
The inverse/opposite of division multiplication
Check an equation 1. Rewrite the original equation 2. substitute in the value of the variable (x) 3. solve each side and see if they are equal x = 15 2x = 30 2(15) = 30 30 = 30
