Percents in the real world Vocab cards

Sales Tax Amount of money added on to the cost of items to help pay for roads, police, fire fighters, bridges etc
Sales Tax rate (varies by county & state) The percent added onto the cost of items THE PERCENT (not the dollar amount)
Gratuity (Tip) Money paid in appreciation for a service given Waiters/ barber/ service people
Markup Increase in the cost of an item to ensure a profit
Discount Amount off the price of an item as a promotion
Interest (both charged and earned) savings accounts earn interest
Principle Initial investment/amount
Commission Money that is a percent of total sales (cars, houses)
Decimal to percent Multiply by 100 (Ex .35 -> 35%)
Percent to decimal Divide by 100 (Ex 765% -> 7.65)
Fraction to percent (1) Fraction -> decimal -> percent, attach percent sign
Fraction to percent (2) Use equivalent fractions to set the denominator of the fraction = 100
Percent to fraction Write percent over 100, remove sign, simplify
Fraction to decimal Divide numerator by denominator
Decimal to fraction Read decimal the way you are supposed to!
