| Term | Definition |

| Sales Tax (as a dollar amount) | Amount of money added on to the cost of items to help pay for roads, police, fire fighters, bridges etc |
| Sales Tax Rate | (varies by county & state) The percent added onto the cost of items THE PERCENT (not the dollar amount) |
| Tip / Gratuity | Money paid in appreciation for a service given Waiters/ barber/ service people |
| Markup | Increase in the cost of an item to ensure a profit |
| Discount | Amount off the price of an item as a promotion |
| Interest (in terms of banking accounts and credit cards) | Savings accounts earn interest |
| Principle (in terms of banking) | An initial investment |
| Commission | Money that is a percent of total sales (cars, houses) |
| Decimal to Percent | Multiply the decimal by 100, attach a percent sign |
| Percent to Decimal | Divide the percent number by 100, remove the percent sign |
| Fraction to Percent (denominator of 100) | fraction to decimal to percent, attach a percent sign |
| Fraction to Percent (denominator of another number than 100) | use equivalent fractions to set the denominator of the fraction = 100 then fraction to decimal to percent, attach a percent sign |
| Percent to Fraction | Write the percent number over 100, remove the percent sign, simplify if possible |
| Fraction to Decimal | Divide numerator by denominator |
| Decimal to Fraction | Read the decimal the way you’re supposed to |
