| Define Satire: | It mocks the follies and vices of people and institutions, inspiring the reader/audience to correct these faults. |
| What's the purpose of satire? | To awaken readers to a problem in society so that they'll be inspired to change how they think or act. |
| Define Irony: | a literary device in which there's a contradiction or contrast between appearance & reality. Reality is usually the opposite of what it seems to be or should be. |
| Verbal irony (definition and 2 types) | When a speaker/writer says 1 thing, but actually means another. Understatement: one minimizes the nature of something. Overstatement: (exaggeration) when one makes the nature of something bigger, important. |
| Situational irony: | When the outcome of a situation is inconsistent with what we expect will happen; when a situation is different from what common sense indicates. |
| Dramatic irony: | when the audience/reader is aware of something that a character doesn't know. |
| Narrative Essay (definition and difference from short story when writing it): | a firsthand account of an experience with a thesis statement. when one writes one, they'll learn more about the topic |

| Short story (def. and difference from narrative essay when writing one): | Fictional with less-direct theme. Learns little when writing one, often fictional. |
| Define Theme: | The universal message the author is trying to get across. |
| Comparison Essay: | an essay that compares the similarities and contrasts the differences of an object, subject, person, etc. |
| Pupose of a Comparison essay: | To present the subtle differences and similarities between 2 things. |
| Define Thesis Statement: | a written sentence that summarizes what the writing assignment is about. It guides the ideas put on paper. |
| Hook, line, and linker: | Hook: drags you in, catches your interest Line and Linker: summarizes the essay and directs you from the hook to the body paragraph. |
| Explain what type of irony is involved in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ: | Situational: what seems to be Christ's weakness leads to His triumph Dramatic: we know what the Jews didn't about Christ's mission to save His people |

She points out what part of it is true and why she thinks he can only succeed with help of someone wicked. (After Macbeth's wife dies life is meaningless to him) |
