text features
| Term | Definition |

| Table of Contents | Lists the major parts of a book along with their page numbers. |
| Index | ls an alphabetical listing of the key names, terms, events, and topics. |
| Glossary | A list of key terms in alphabetical order. Each key word is defined or explained. |
| Heading | tell the reader the topic of the text. The heading focuses the reader on the BIG IDEA of the text. |
| Subheadings | they divide the text into sections. Subheadings tell the main idea of that section. |
| Photographs | give information in a visual way. Someone with a camera took a picture and put it among the nonfiction text. |
| Captions | explain what is shown in the picture or illustration |
| Map | drawings that show the basic shape of the land and other geographical, political, historical features. |
| Diagram | a drawing that shows or explains something. It often features labels |
| Table | they organize large amounts of information in a small amount of space, often with rows and columns. Tables help the reader compare information in the text. |
