Chemistry Unit 2 Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Excited State | When an atom has more energy than it has at ground state. |
| Ground State | Lowest energy state in a quantized system. |
| Ionization Energy | Energy required to remove an electron from an atom or ion. |
| Electronegativity | Ability of an atom to attract electrons in a chemical compound. |
| Electromagnetic Spectrum | All frequencies of electromagnetic radiation. |
| Avogadro's Number | The number of atoms or molecules in 1 mole; 6.02 x 1023. |
| Electron Affinity | Energy change when a neutral atom acquires an electron. |
| Mole | SI base unit to measure the amount of substance. |
| Photon | Particle of electromagnetic radiation; unit or quantum of light. |
| Orbital | Where there is a high probability of receiving electrons. |
| Electron Configuration | Arrangement of electrons. |
| Pauli Exclusion Principle | Principle that states two particles of a certain class cannot be in the same exact energy state. |
| Hund's Rule | Singly occupied with one electron before any orbital is doubly occupied, all electrons in singly occupied orbitals spin the same; the number of unpair electrons is the maximum and these unpaired electrons bond between atoms. |
