Poetry Vocabulary

TermDefinition
lyric poem a short poem that expresses strong feelings in a songlike quality
ballad a narrative poem that tells a story and is usually set to music
epic a long narrative poem telling of a hero's deeds
haiku a short Japanese poem with 3 lines
elegy a mournful poem for the dead
free verse poetry that does not rhyme or have a regular meter
sonnet a verse form of 14 lines with a fixed rhyme scheme
couplet a stanza consisting of 2 successive lines of verse
ode a lyric poem that praises a person, idea, or event
alliteration use of the same consonant at the beginning of each word (Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers...)
metaphor a figure of speech that is NOT literal (it's raining cats and dogs)
simile a figure of speech showing a resemblance between things (often uses LIKE and AS)
personification attributing human characteristics to abstract ideas (The sun smiled at us)
imagery The ability to form mental pictures using the 5 senses
symbol something that stands for something else (A red rose is a symbol of love)
theme The idea or meaning behind the topic of the writing (LOVE might be the topic, while LEARNING TO LOVE might be the theme)
tone The attitude or "mood" of the writing (joyful, sad, optimistic...)
stanza a fixed number of lines of verse in a unit of the poem (In "Twas the NIght..." it was every 4 lines)
rhyme the repetition of syllables, typically at the end of a line
repetition The continued use of the same word or word pattern
