| Adulteration | The action or making something poorer in quality by the addition of another substance. (Misbranded food or drug) |
| Barbiturate | A central nervous system depressant |
| DEA | Drug Enforcement Administration. Regulates controlled substances |
| Standards | Something set up and established by authority as a rule for the measure of quantity, weight, extent, value, or quality |
| FDA | Food and Drug Administration. Oversees pharmacies at the federal level |
| HIPAA | Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act |
| Orphan Drug | A drug that is developed for small populations of people in need of the drug. |
| Misbranding | Fraudulent labeling and marking of a drug |
| Crime | A violation of the law. |
| NDC | A 11 digit number that indicates specifics of a prescription drug or an insulin product. Indicates drug manufacturer, the drug product (strength, dosage form, and formulation), and the package size. Database maintained by FDA |
| Negligence | A legal concept that describes an action taken without the forethought that should have been taken by a reasonable person of similar competency. |
| Malpractice | professional misconduct, or the demonstration of an unreasonable lack of skill, resulting in injury, loss, or damage to a patient |
| Bioethics | a discipline dealing with the ethical and moral implications of biological research and applications |
| Law | A rule or regulation established by a governing body |
| USP/NF | United States Pharmacopeia / National Formulary |
| neurotransmitters | Biochemicals formed in and released from neurons to stimulate or inhibit cell actions. Disorders in their production, function may contribute to psychiatric illnesses |
| Acetylcholine | Stimulating neurotransmitter that plays a major role in cognitive function and memory formation, motor control |
| Dopamine | Stimulating neurotransmitter that plays a major role in motor control, memory, attention span, motivation, pleasure, creative thought. |
| Norepinephrine | Stimulating neurotransmitter that plays a role in "fight or flight" response. |
| Serotonin | "Happy" neurotransmitter. Regulates mood and body temperature |
| Serotonin syndrome | Very high levels of serotonin caused by drug interactions or misuse. Symptoms include agitation, confusion, rapid heart rate, fever, and seizures. Can be fatal. |
| Gamma-aminobutyric acid | Relaxing neurotransmitter. Reduces anxiety and induces sleep. |
| Schizophrenia | mental illness characterized by disorganized thought, social withdrawal, hallucinations, and poor judgment |
| bipolar disorder | mental illness characterized by extreme excitation (mania) and deep depression. |
| depression | a mood disorder caused by neurotransmitter deficits, characterized by a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. |
