| Dependant Clause | A group of words with a subject and a verb that cannot stand alone as a sentence |
| Independent Clause | A group of words with a subject and a verb that can stand alone as a sentence |
| Simple Sentence | A sentence which contains one independent clause |
| Compound Sentence | A sentence which contains two independent clauses |
| Compound Complex Sentence | A sentence which contains two independent clauses and one or more dependant clauses |
| Fragment | A group of words that does not express a complete thought |
| Comma Splice | The error of joining two independent clauses with only a comma |
| Fused Sentence | The error of joining two independent clauses with nothing at all |
| Run-on Sentence | The error of joining more than two independent clauses with and or but |
| Verbal Phrase | A group of words with a verbal: infinitive, gerund, participle |
| Coordination | The act of joining two independent clauses in one of three ways. Semicolon, Semicolon + Conjunctive Adverb + Comma, Comma + Coordinate Conjunction |
| Subordination | The act of joining and independent clause to a dependent clause using a subordinate conjunction |
