Grammar Terms

QuestionAnswer
Phrase A group of words without a subject and a verb
Clause A group of words with a subject and a verb
Dependant Clause A group of words with a subject and a verb that cannot stand alone as a sentence
Independent Clause A group of words with a subject and a verb that can stand alone as a sentence
Simple Sentence A sentence which contains one independent clause
Compound Sentence A sentence which contains two independent clauses
Compound Complex Sentence A sentence which contains two independent clauses and one or more dependant clauses
Fragment A group of words that does not express a complete thought
Comma Splice The error of joining two independent clauses with only a comma
Fused Sentence The error of joining two independent clauses with nothing at all
Run-on Sentence The error of joining more than two independent clauses with and or but
Verbal Phrase A group of words with a verbal: infinitive, gerund, participle
Coordination The act of joining two independent clauses in one of three ways. Semicolon, Semicolon + Conjunctive Adverb + Comma, Comma + Coordinate Conjunction
Subordination The act of joining and independent clause to a dependent clause using a subordinate conjunction
