Unit 2 Vocab

TermDefinition
numerator the number ABOVE the fraction bar in a fraction that tells the number of equal parts that are being described.
denominator the number BELOW the fraction bar in a fraction that tells the number of equal parts in the whole.
equivalent fraction two or more fractions that name the same part of a whole or the same point on a number line
common denominators a number that is a common multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions.
fraction bar the line that separates the numerator from the denominator in a fraction and it means "divided by".
benchmark fraction a common fraction that you might compare other fractions to
multiple numbers that you get when you multiply by 2, 3, 4, 5, ..
factors numbers that you multiply together to get a product
fraction a number that names equal parts of a whole.
quotient the result or answer to a division problem
improper fraction a fraction that is greater than 1 whole because the numerator is greater or equal to the denominator.
mixed number a number that has a whole number and a fraction
area the amount of space inside a closed two- dimensional figure.
unit fraction a fraction with a numerator of one
