Solar System

QuestionAnswer
Astronomical Unit The average distance from the sun to the earth. 93 million miles.
Terrestrial Planets Dense, rocky planets closest to the sun. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars.
Mercury Smallest terrestrial planet.
Venus Often called Earth's twin. High temperatures.
Prograde rotation Counterclockwise spin (Earth)
Retrograde rotation Clockwise spin (Venus)
Earth Right distance from the sun for life to exist.
Mars Cold planet with polar icecaps.
Gas Giants Planets with deep massive atmospheres. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
Jupiter The largest planet. It gives off more energy than it receives from the sun. Has a Great Red Spot that is a giant storm
Saturn Noted for its rings of icy particles.
Uranus Axis of rotation is tilted by almost 90 degrees.
Neptune The blue planet. Has a Great Dark Spot that is a storm.
Mass The amount of matter in an object. Mass does not change on other planets. Measured by kilograms or grams.
Weight A force created by gravity. Weight changes on different planets. Measured in Newtons (N)
Gravity A force of attraction between two objects.
When does gravity increase? When masses are bigger or objects are closer.
What would happen to your mass if you were on the moon? It would stay the same.
What would happen to your weight if you were on the moon? It would be less because there is less gravity.
In the phases of the moon, what does waxing mean? Waxing means that more of the moon is showing each day.
In the phases of the moon, what does waning mean? Waning means that less of the moon is showing each day.
