Transformations
Geometric Transformations
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Transformation | An operation that moves or changes a geometric figure in some way to produce a new figure. |
| Image | The new figure produced by a transformation. The sides are noted as primes. |
| Pre-image | The image before any transformation occurs. Your “starting” image |
| Translation | Moves every point of a figure the same distance in the same direction. Slide/shift left/right/up/down |
| Reflection | Uses a line of reflection to create a mirror image of the original figure. Flip. |
| Rotation | Turns a figure about a fixed point called the center of rotation. Spin/Turn. |
| Rigid Motion | Preserves the size and shape of a figure. Corresponding angles and sides are congruent. |
| Dilation | Stretches or shrinks a figure to create a similar figure. Is a type of similarity transformation and is not congruent, isometric, or rigid. |
| Similar | Corresponding angles are congruent, corresponding sides are proportional. |
| Congruent | Corresponding angles & sides are congruent. |
| Rule for reflection over y = x | swap x & y |
| Rule for 90 CCW rotation | swap x & y and change sign of original y |
| Rule for 180 CCW rotation | change signs of x and y |
