| ON / OFF CALL | if a worker such as a doctor is on call, he or she is available to work or make official visits at any time when needed (de guardia) |
| CLINIC | a building where people go to receive medical advice or treatment. |
| WARD | one of the parts or large rooms into which a hospital is divided |
| CONSULTING ROOM | the room or clinic where a doctor works |
| A&E | the room or department in a hospital where people who have severe injuries or sudden illnesses are taken for emergency treatment. |
| INTENSIVE CARE UNIT | a part of a hospital where patients who are extremely ill or very badly injured are looked after constantly |
| OUTPATIENT CLINIC | the place in which someone receives medical treatment at a hospital, but does not stay there for the night |

| X-RAY | a type of radiation that can go through many solid substances, allowing hidden objects such as bones and organs in the body to be photographed |
| STOOL TEST | a series of tests done on a stool (feces) sample to help diagnose certain conditions affecting the digestive tract |
| SMEAR TEST | a test for the early detection of cancer of the uterus and cervix (pap) |
| BLOOD TEST | a laboratory analysis performed on a blood sample |
| ULTRASOUND TEST | an imaging test that uses sound waves to create a picture of organs, tissues, and other structures inside the body |
| CAT SCAN | a medical test in which computer technology is used for producing an image of the inside of a part of your body, or the image that is produced in this way (tomografía computarizada) |
| ELECTROCARDIOGRAM | a record or display of a person's heartbeat produced by electrocardiography |
| OPERATE | to cut into part of someone’s body for medical reasons |
| DANDRUFF | small white pieces of dry skin in your hair (caspa) |
| BUNION | a painful swollen area on the side of your big toe (juanete) |
| CONJUNCTIVITIS | a painful infection of the eyes that makes them red and makes the eyelids swollen and sticky |
| SWOLLEN | if a part of your body is swollen, it is larger and rounder than normal, usually as a result of injury or illness |
| OFF COLOUR / UNDER THE WEATHER | feeling slightly ill |
| SORE | painful and uncomfortable, usually as a result of an injury, infection, or too much exercise |
| STIFF NECK | your neck hurts because muscles are overused, stretched too far, or strained |
| BRUISED / BLACK AND BLUE | covered in bruises |
| BUMP | a raised part on your skin where you have been injured (chichón) |
| MOLE | a dark brown lump or spot on your skin that is permanent (lunar) |
| LUMP | a small hard part on or under your skin that is caused by illness or injury (nódulo) |
| CYST | a lump containing liquid that grows under your skin or inside your body and that sometimes needs to be removed (quiste) |
| BOIL | a painful swelling on the skin that is filled with pus (forunculo) |
| BLISTER | a swollen area on your skin that is full of a clear liquid and is caused by being burned or rubbed (ampolla) |
| COLD | a minor illness that blocks your nose and makes you cough. |
| FLU | a common infectious illness that causes fever and headache |
| SORE THROAT | a condition in which your throat is red and feels painful, especially when you swallow (dolor de garganta) |
| COUGH | to suddenly push air out of your throat with a short sound, often repeatedly (toser) |
| BRONCHITIS | an illness that affects your bronchial tubes and makes you cough (bronquitis) |
| SINUSITIS | your sinus (the spaces in the bones of your head that are connected to the inside of your nose) becomes swollen |
| PNEUMONIA | a serious illness affecting your lungs that makes it difficult for you to breathe (neumonía) |
| MIGRAINE | an extremely bad headache, during which you feel sick and have pain behind your eyes |
| GALLSTONE | a stone formed within the gallbladder |
| APPENDICITIS | an illness in which your appendix becomes infected and has to be removed |
| FRACTURED | broken or cracked |
| SPRAINED | (of a joint) having been injured by a sudden twisting or wrenching of its ligaments (esguinzado) |
| BENT | not straight; curved (torcido, doblado) |
| RHEUMATISM / ARTHRITIS | a disease that makes your joints or muscles painful and stiff |
| TUMOUR | a mass of cells in your body that grow in a way that is not normal |
| LEUKEMIA | a type of cancer affecting your blood |
| CARDIAC ARREST | a failure of the heart to pump blood; a heart attack (ataque cardíaco) |
| STROKE | if you have this, a blood vessel in the brain bursts or becomes blocked, which may kill you or make you unable to move one side of their body. (ACV) |
| CHOLERA | a serious disease affecting your stomach and intestines that often causes death |
| RABIES | a disease of dogs and other animals that causes madness and death |
| AIDS | Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome: a serious disease caused by a virus that destroys the body's immune system and is passed from one person to another through body fluids (SIDA) |
| EPILEPSY | a serious medical condition that affects the brain and makes you suddenly shake in an uncontrolled way or become unconscious |
| SCLEROSIS | a process in which a soft organ or soft tissue in your body becomes hard |
| HERNIA | a medical condition in which an organ pushes itself through the wall of muscles around it |
| ULCER | a sore area on the inside of an organ in your body or on your skin that sometimes bleeds or produces a poisonous substance |
| MALNUTRITION | physical weakness and bad health caused by having too little food, or too little of the types of food necessary for good health |
| DIABETES | a disease in which the body cannot control the level of sugar in the blood |
| SYPHILIS | a serious disease which is passed on through sexual intercourse. |
| ANAEMIA | a medical condition in which there are too few red cells in your blood, causing you to feel tired and look pale. |
| HEPATITIS | an infectious disease of the liver that can be very serious |
| MENTAL DISORDER | mental illness; psychiatric disorder |
| INSANITY | the condition of being seriously mentally ill |
| HALLUCINATION | the experience of seeing something that is not really there because you are ill or have taken a drug |
| DEPRESSION | a medical condition in which a person is so unhappy that they cannot live a normal life |

| IN DENIAL | a state in which someone will not admit that they have knowledge, responsibility, or feelings |
| MOURNING PERIOD | the period of time during which a death is officially mourned |
| DEFENSE MECHANISM | an automatic way of behaving or thinking by which you protect yourself from something, especially from feeling unpleasant emotions |
| COPE | to succeed in dealing with a difficult problem or situation |
| COPING MECHANISM | something a person does to deal with a difficult situation |
| CHRONIC STRESS | a consistent sense of feeling pressured and overwhelmed over a long period of time |
| STRESSOR | something that causes stress |
| ANXIETY | a worried feeling you have because you think something bad might happen |
| PSYCHOSOMATIC RESPONSE | real physical symptoms that arise from or are influenced by the mind and emotions |
| OCD | an anxiety disorder involving obsessions or compulsive rituals or both (obsessive-compulsive disorder) |
| BIPOLAR DISORDER | a serious mental illness in which someone experiences extreme changes in mood, sometimes feeling very excited and sometimes very unhappy |
| SCHIZOPHRENIA | a serious mental illness in which the way that you think and feel is not connected with what is really happening |
| PHOBIA | a very strong feeling of disliking or being afraid of someone or something |

| RESILIENCY | the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties such as an illness, disappointment, or other problem |
| CURE | to stop someone from being affected by an illness |
| HEAL | (of an injury) to become healthy again |
| MUMPS | a disease that mainly affects children in which the neck becomes swollen and painful (paperas) |
| MEASLES | an infectious disease common in children in which there are red spots all over the body and a high temperature (sarampión) |
| CHICKENPOX | an infectious disease that most children get once, in which the skin is covered with red spots. (varicela) |
| SMALLPOX | an extremely infectious disease that causes a fever, spots on the skin, and often death (viruela) |
| TONSILLITIS | inflammation of the tonsils (angina) |
| ANGINA | a severe pain in the chest and left arm, caused by heart disease. (angina de pecho) |
| ILL | not healthy, because of a medical condition or an injury. |
| SICK | when you are/feel this way, food you have eaten suddenly comes out of your stomach through your mouth; to vomit |
| PAIN | a feeling that you have in a part of your body when you are hurt or ill (as a vb=to affect) |
| ACHE | a pain that is continuous and unpleasant, but usually not very strong. |
| HURT | to feel pain |
| CONTAGIOUS | (of a disease) to spread from one person to another through touch or through the air |
| CATCHY | (of a tune or phrase) to attract your attention and be easy to remember |
| DAMAGE | physical harm caused to something which makes it less attractive, useful or valuable |
| HARM | damage, injury, or trouble caused by someone’s actions or by an event |
| INJURE | to hurt someone and cause damage to their body |
