| Mantle | The layer below the crust. |
| Core | The center of the earth. |
| Lithosphere | The outermost physical layer of the earth. |
| Asthenosphere | The solid thin layer of mantle material below the lithosphere. |
| Mesosphere | The lower part of the mantle. |
| Seismic wave | Earthquakes release waves of energy that travels through rock. |
| Continental drift | The hypothesis that a single large mass of land broke to form continents, and drift farther away . |
| Plate tectonics | The theory that earth's outer layer is made of large, moving pieces. |
| Theory | A system of ideas that explains Many related observations that's supported by a large body of evidence. |
| Sea-floor spreading | The process when the lithosphere is formed by cooling magma. |
| Subduction | The process when lithospheric plates move on top of another causing tectonic action. |
| Magnetic reversal | When the north and south poles of the earth switch periodically. |
| Convenction current | Any movement of matter that results results in difference in density. |
| P waves | Travel through solids, liquids, and gasses. |
| S waves | Travel only through solids. |
