scientific notation a way of expressing really large or really small numbers using a coefficient and exponent
valence electron the electron(s) located in the outermost shell of an atom
electromagnetic spectrum the entire range of energy waves that exist
visible light the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that our eyes can detect
wavelength the distance from crest to crest on an energy wave
frequency the number of energy waves that move past a given point in 1 second
excited state when an electron has gained energy and moved to a shell further away from the nucleus
ground state the normal location of an electron before it gains energy from the environment
photon a packet of energy
emission spectra light given off by excited atoms creates a line pattern that corresponds with the wavelength of the colors of light
spectroscope a device that allows our eyes to see individual wavelengths of light
