Odyssey Key Terms and Information-English

| Epic | a long narrative poem, about a hero of great strength, courage and bravery. |
| Epic Hero | a great and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements |
| Oral Tradition | tradition passed through generations through word of mouth |
| Fatal Flaw | also called “tragic flaw”. Trait a character has that leads to his downfall, often with the hero. |
| Hubris | extreme pride that usually leads to a character’s downfall. |
| In Media Res | Latin for “in the middle of things”; usually describing how a narrative begins, not with the beginning, but the middle of a story. |
| Homeric Simile | aka “epic similes”; long, elaborate comparisons between to different objects using like or as. |
| Archetype | aka “Universal symbol”; a typical character, an action, or situation that seems to represent universal patterns of human nature. |
| Trickster | a character that shows intellect or secret knowledge and uses it to play tricks or disobey normal rules and behavior. |
| Xenia | the ancient Greek concept of hospitality towards those far from home. |
| Nostos (from the video) | trying to get home; homecoming |
| Homer | a blind poet who compiled stories about the Trojan war; wrote the two epics The Iliad and The Odyssey. |
| Odysseus | King of Ithaca, husband of Penelope, father of Telemachus, son of Laertes. 1st Greek epic hero to show intellect as well as muscle. |
| The Iliad | The epic Homer wrote preceding the Odyssey. About the 10 year war with Troy, fought over Helen, who left her husband Menelaus with Paris, prince of Troy. |
| The Odyssey | epic after Iliad about Odysseus’s 10-year difficult journey home from Troy. |
| Athena | daughter of Zeus; goddess of wisdom and patroness of the arts. |
| Zues | the supreme god and king of Olympus |
| Agamemnon | king of Mycenae and leader of Achaean expedition to Troy. |
| Troy | kingdom destroyed by Greeks in the Trojan war, located on the coast of Asia Minor. |
| Ithaca | The island kingdom of Odysseus. Off the west coast of Greece. |
| Sparta | the kingdom of Menelaus, located on the Peloponnesian Peninsula. |
| Hades | The land of the dead. Aka: Tartarus or Klysium. |
| Helen | Wife of Menelaus; cause of Trojan War |
| Laertes | father of Odysseus; lives in isolation; alert and agile, despite his age. |
| Menalaus | king of Sparta, husband of Helen, brother of Agamemnon. |
| Penelope | Serious and perfect wife/mother in many aspects. wife of Odysseus, mother of Telemachus; |
| Polyphemus | Cyclops who held Odysseus and his men captive until he was blinded by Odysseus. |
| Telemachus | Odysseus and Penelope's son. |
