Partial sum | the sums you get in each step of the partial-sum strategy. For example, the partial sums for 124 + 234 are 100 + 200 or 300, 20 + 30 or 50, and 4 + 4 or 8. |
Algorithm | a set of routine steps used to solve problems. |
Round | to find a number that is close in value to a given number by finding the nearest ten, hundred, or other place value. |
Regroup | to put together or break apart ones, tens, or hundreds. For example, 10 ones can be regrouped as 1 ten, or 1 hundred can be regrouped as 10 tens. |
Place value | the value assigned to a digit based on its position in a number. For example, the 2 in 324 is in the tens place and has a value of 2 tens or 20. |
Estimate | to give an approximate number or answer based on mathematical thinking. |
