Term | Definition |

Associative property of addition | when the grouping of 3 or more addends is changed, the total does not change. |
Addend | a number being added. |
Regroup | to put together or break apart ones, tens, or hundreds. For example, 10 ones can be regrouped as 1 ten, or 1 hundred can be regrouped as 10 tens. |
Sum | the result of addition. |
Array | a set of objects arranged in equal rows and equal columns. |
Row | the horizontal groups of objects in an array. |
Column | the vertical groups of objects in an array. |
Estimate | to give an approximate number or answer based on mathematical thinking. |
Place value | the value assigned to a digit based on its position in a number. For example, the 2 in 324 is in the tens place and has a value of 2 tens or 20. |

Round | to find a number that is close in value to a given number by finding the nearest ten, hundred, or other place value. |
Algorithm | a set of routine steps used to solve problems. |
Partial sum | the sums you get in each step of the partial-sum strategy. For example, the partial sums for 124 + 234 are 100 + 200 or 300, 20 + 30 or 50, and 4 + 4 or 8. |

Equation | a mathematical statement that uses an equal sign (=) to show that two expressions have the same value |
Multiplication equation | an equation with a multiplication symbol and an equal sign. For example 3x5=15 |
Multiplication | an operation used to find the total number of items in a given number of equal-sized groups |
Factor | a number that is multiplied |
Product | The result of multiplication |
Multiply | to repeatedly add the same number a certain number of times, Used to find the total number of items in equal-sized groups |
Expression | one or more numbers, unknown numbers, and/or operation symbols that represents a quantity. For example, 3x4 |
