Bases
These are questions based on the topic we did on bases
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a Base? | 1)A proton acceptor 2) A substance which reacts with an aid to form a salt and water |
| What is a Alkali? | A base which dissolves in water to form a solution containing OH- ions |
| What is a Strong Alkali? | Fully ionized when dissolved in water e.g. KOH and NaOH |
| What is a Weak Alkali? | Partially ionized when dissolved in water e.g. NH3 |
| Base + Acid -----> | Salt + water |
| Base + Ammonium-----> | Salt + ammonia + water |
| What are Amphoteric substance? | A substance which can react with both acids and alkali to form salt and water. These include the oxides and hydroxides of Zn, Al and Pb |
| What are acidic oxides? | Oxides of certain non-metal which react with alkalis to form salt and water |
| What are basic oxides? | Oxides of metals which react with acids to form a salt and water |
| What are neutral oxides? | Oxides of certain non-metals which do not react with acids or alkali |
| How are acids and bases classified | As strong or weak based on their degree of ionization when they are dissolved in water |
| What are two ways ph can be measured quantitatively? | 1) Universal indicator(paper or solution form) 2) PH meter |
