Few canals and roads were poor, and southern rail lines were short, local and didn't connect all parts of the region in a network. |
Why was there little industry in the South? | 1. Lack of capital, Southerners had their wealth invested on land and slaves. They would have to sell both to raise $. 2. Boom of cotton sales 3. South consists of enslave people with no money 4. Some did not want industry to flourish there |
List two differences between yeoman and plantation owners | A "yeoman" works his own property for himself/his family's benefit. They are family farms, and specialize in subsistence, with any excess being available for sale/trade. |
Plantation owners | Plantation owners specialize in a set of crops to make money through their sale or trade, worked by others, generally slaves. |
Explain why some free African Americans might own slaves | They purchased their own family members in order to free them. |
Compare the life of a plantation owner to that of a small farmer | Small farmers:didn't live in a elegant mansions; owned land of 50 to 200 acres; hunted and fished; self sufficient. Plantation owner: possessed homes, furnishings and clothing; owned large amounts of land |
Slave codes were laws relating to slavery. Give some examples of the laws. | Prohibited slaves from assembling in large groups and from leaving their masters property. It controlled the lives of enslaved African Americans and denied their basic rights |
Why did the invention of the cotton gin increase the demand for enslaved people? | It made it possible to grow more cotton. So even though the cotton gin meant less people or slaves had to operate it, it made growing cotton more profitable so that more people planted more cotton. This meant they needed more slaves. |
