Story Elements

This stack will help you to review the story elements vocabulary.

TermDefinition
plot the series of events in a story that usually center around a conflict; five stages are exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution
conflict a struggle between opposing forces
external conflict involves a character who struggles against a force outside him- or herself, such as nature, society, or another character
internal conflict a struggle that occurs within a character
setting the time and place of the action; elements include geographic location, historical period (past, present, or future), season, time of day, and culture
exposition (basic situation) the first stage of a typical story; provides important background information and introduces the setting, the important characters, and the conflict
rising action (complications) the stage of the plot that develops the conflict, or struggle; events occur that make the conflict more complicated
suspense a feeling of growing tension and excitement experienced by a reader; makes a reader curious about the outcome of a story or an event within a story
climax the stage of the plot that usually occurs toward the end of a story, after the reader has understood the conflict; the conflict is resolved and the outcome of the plot usually becomes clear. *Is considered the turning point of the story
falling action the stage of the plot in which the story begins to draw to a close; tension eases
resolution the final stage of the plot; all of the loose ends are tied up and the story comes to a close
